LMEP Health and Wellness

At Lincoln Medical Education Partnership (LMEP), we are focused on the health and wellness of our patients, our providers, and our care teams. Having health goals helps people to live longer and enjoy life even more. We hope that our attention to health and wellness will encourage a positive culture at LMEP, so that everyone who walks through our doors will have a great experience and a more positive, full life.

We encourage our team and patients to assess their state of health, starting with the following areas:

  • Diet

  • Fitness

  • Work / Life balance

  • Family health history

  • Learning

We then ask: What areas could you make changes, even small ones, that would move you toward a healthier lifestyle? We encourage them to consider learning a new skill or taking up a hobby. Both are great ways to help reduce stress in your life and maybe spotlight a talent they have. Making sure to set measurable goals helps with achieving success. Having positive relationships also plays an important role in health and wellness, and should not be overlooked.

Our 100-day Global Challenge

One way for our team to connect in our building is by joining our wellness challenge. LMEP had eight teams participating in the 2020 100-day Global Challenge sponsored by Virgin Pulse.

For 15 years, the Global Challenge has been providing employees with the knowledge, tools, and support they need to build new healthy habits.

Our leaderboard for the 100-Day Virgin Pulse Global Challenge gets competitive! On Day 1 of 2020, teams averaged 10,448 steps per day. By Week 5, teams were averaging 12,868 steps per day. Check out the Week 4 stats in the 2020 global challenge.

Health and Wellness for our Resident Doctors

Wellness is a priority for our residents. Our Lincoln Family Medicine Residency Program offers a wellness program to help prevent burnout among resident physicians. We help them maintain a balance between work and lifestyle by creating opportunities for them to get together and have fun. Faculty focus on engaging residents in a number of social activities throughout the three years of training. Some activities the residents enjoy together are bowling; basketball, softball, and dodgeball leagues; and picnics and outings in the Lincoln, Nebraska parks and trails. We even took the Lincoln Parks & Recreation Basketball League Division Champ title in 2020!

In general, we also like to remind residents about self-care and preventing burnout with these tips:

• Look for programs that provide social support, mentoring, and wellness programs.

• Reduce stress at work by delegating tasks that can be done by someone else.

• Develop good eating habits, get enough sleep, exercise regularly, and take time to relax.

• Surround yourself with the right people.

Our residency program is all about taking care of our future generations of family medicine physicians, so they can take care of our community!

Our Residents Work Hard and We Get It!

In a 24-hour period, a resident's day can cover a lot of territory.

• Our residents get to see patients in all kinds of settings, such as in hospitals, in our family medicine center, during home visits, at nursing homes, etc.

• The residents spend multiple hours on educational activities every week, including studying cases that get presented in clinic, hospital, and rotation settings or daily didactics.

• When it comes to managing their time, sometimes residents forget to pencil in meals. That's why we make sure to have plenty of food, snacks, and refreshments on hand at all times so they can keep their bodies fueled.

• Many of our residents enjoy exercising and running full/half marathons to better their wellness. One of our residents even participated in an ultramarathon (ran 50 miles).

Being a resident is just as rewarding as it is challenging. We're here to support our residents and care team in every way possible, so they can support our patients!
